Island Gardens

River Thames - Island Gardens, London (E14 3DW) Island Gardens is a public park located at the southern end of the Isle of Dogs in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets on the north bank of the River Thames. The 1.12-hectare (2.8-acre) waterside park is notable for its spectacular cross-river view of the classical buildings of the former Greenwich Hospital, the Cutty Sark and the National Maritime Museum, with Greenwich Park forming a backdrop. The northern entrance of the Greenwich foot tunnel is also within the park. It is almost certain that the view from this location is the one that the Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) painting 'A View of Greenwich from the River' is taken from. http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/canaletto-a-view-of-greenwich-from-the-river-l01926 Tate Britain display room: 1730 Painting display caption: 'When Canaletto arrived in England in 1746, he was already well-known as ‘the famous painter of views of Venice’. He stayed for nearly a decade, his presence raising the status of landscape painting here. This view shows the riverfront at Greenwich with the Royal Naval Hospital, and the Queen’s House in the centre beyond. The imposing architecture of the hospital building was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, who was also responsible for the Royal Observatory which can be seen on the hill in the distance'. Gallery label, November 2016
